Abstract

The coexistence of sentimental fiction and chivalric fiction during the 16th century can be seen in work such as the first book of the Fourth Part of Florisel de Niquea (1551) by Feliciano de Silva. Specifically, the episode entiled "The Adventra of the Joys and Anguish of Love in Glory of Fenisbela" narrates a tragic encounter between two lovers based on the classic myth of Pyrams and Thisbe, whose modificatios and additions reveal elements of sentimental fiction. The story allows us the contrast the fidelity of the story's protagonists, Finisbel and Fenisbela, with that of the main character of the work, Rogel of Greece, highlighting his psychological evolution with respect to loving loyalty. In this way, the episode shows how Feliciano links sentimental ficition and chivalric fiction, presenting a narrative that examines loving fidelity and the use of narrative elements belonging to both traditions.
