Merlin. The story of an omnium temporum character.
Keywords:
Merlin, Arthurian literature, King Arthu, Gift of prophec, BritanniaAbstract
The central objective of this work is to approach one of the most important figures of Arthurian literature, such as the 'magician' Merlin, through the various transformations, versions and interpretations that he has had as a character between reality, fantasy and the myth. This will be done starting from a historical review from its probable Celtic origins and oral tradition (druids and Bretons), until it becomes a literary character. It will be seen how he relates to the courtly world of King Arthur between the 12th and 13th centuries (Latin chronicle) and later, how he appears in fictions in common languages. Magician? sage? devil? hermitage of the forest? fortune teller? Towards the end, the work accounts for the validity of the character in contemporary artistic expressions achieved, mainly, during the Middle Ages.
