Abstract

This work is based on the conviction that understanding an author's poetics and incorporating it into the study of his work helps to better locate and understand the core meanings it contains. Carlos Fuentes' poetics, stemming from a long tradition, is composed of artistic, historical and social concerns. Each of these concerns, in turn, can be divided into various specific areas: the Conquest, the origin and development of our miscegenation, Mexico's politics and its relationship-comparison with the United States, the Mexican Revolution and many other topics that appear in his creative works from multiple facets. One of the works where most of these concerns come together is the novel Cristóbal Nonato, one of the most complicated for criticism, in which irony plays a fundamental role and, therefore, generates polysemy that resists a univocal reading. That is why we make an attempt here to elucidate one of its angles that we consider basic for its. interpretation: the author's poetics.
