The role of food and drink in Los Infortunios of Alonso Ramírez Autor: Pablo Esteban Valdés Flores
Keywords:
Picaresca, pirates, food, nativesAbstract
Los infortunios de Alonso Ramírez is a work that includes several elements of the picaresca genre. Among them, I recognize in a particular way the hunger, whose presence is recurrent throughout this work written by Carlos Sigüenza y Góngora. With regard to this element of hunger, I take into account the relevance of food and drink that fulfils a narrative function. For example, it may be noted that the corn or brandy throughout the story reflect not only commercial consumption or sale motives but also part of a culture. Also, I aim particularly to identify how these elements of food and drink play an important role in consolidating part of the historical and humorous approach of the text.
