Abstract

Juan Rulfo's short stories offer a representation of the state of ruin and abandonment of rural communities afther the Mexican Revolution. The stories tell of towns with failed social institutions and regions destroyed by natural disasters. The peasants subsist in conditions of poverty and social abandonment. This article reviews the tale "Es que somos muy pobres" with the intention of addressing the relationship between natural disaster and the breaking of family ties. It is proposed that family values can be transgressed by strong vital impulses in the same way that the torrent of an overflowing river can drag with animals, crops and houses.
