Abstract

Since the publication of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, fictional buccaneers as of today have obtained most of their features following the pattern of John Silver and his aesthetic motives, which we can find in the novel. Nevertheless, before Treasure Island, other kind of pirates in the Romanticism were the main characters of several lyric, narrative and dramatic works which made an important contribution to enrich the literary pirate figure. One of them is Bertram, by Charles Maturin, character and text that received some rewritings and, carrying their Byronic inspiration, crossed linguistic and artistic boundaries and turned to be the base for a highly Romantic opera: Il pirata, by Vincenzo Bellini and his librettist, Felice Romani.
